Getting to Liptovský Trnovec by Car, Train or Plane

By car on the D1: where to leave the motorway

Liptovský Trnovec lies on the north shore of Liptovská Mara (often searched for as Liptovska Mara lake), about 7 km from the centre of Liptovský Mikuláš. Leave the D1 motorway at the Liptovský Mikuláš exit (no. 42), whether you are coming from Bratislava or from Košice. From there, head towards the town centre and then north-west to Liptovský Trnovec. It is the same route as to the Tatralandia water park; the cabin is another 2.5 km beyond it.

Approximate driving times, without breaks:

• from Bratislava about 3 h, on the D1 via Trenčín, Žilina and Ružomberok,
• from Žilina about 1 h 15 min (approx. 100 km),
• from Košice about 2 h, on the D1 via Prešov and Poprad.

Rather than just the village name, enter the cabin’s GPS coordinates (49.1100234, 19.5418718) into your satnav, especially if you are arriving after dark. Check-in is from 16:00, and we will send you the code for the key box in advance. There are two parking spaces at the cabin, inside the enclosed grounds. If you are coming with three cars, let us know before you arrive.

How much is the Slovak motorway vignette in 2026?

Slovak motorways use an electronic vignette (e-vignette, in Slovak “e-známka”): a motorway toll pass that you buy for a set period. It is linked to your car’s registration number, so there is nothing to stick on the windscreen. Prices for cars stayed the same in 2026 as in 2025:

• 1 day: €8.10
• 10 days: €10.80
• 30 days: €17.10
• 365 days (annual): €90

The official places to buy it are eznamka.sk, the eZnamka app and the sales points at border crossings. Third-party reseller websites charge more for the same vignette, so give them a miss. When buying, double-check your registration number and the country where the car is registered.

For a weekend, the 10-day vignette is the one to get. If you drive on the motorway on Friday on the way here and on Sunday on the way back, two 1-day vignettes would cost €16.20, whereas a 10-day one costs €10.80.

From Poland, Hungary and Czechia

From Poland. From Kraków it takes about 3 h by car, from Katowice about 3 h 15 min. You cross the border at Trstená (via Chyżne) or at Suchá Hora (via Chochołów). From the Orava region, road no. 584 runs via Zuberec, the Huty pass and Liptovské Matiašovce to Liptovská Mara and on to Liptovský Mikuláš. It is a quick link between Orava and Liptov, but it goes over a mountain pass. If you would rather avoid Huty in winter, you can go round via Dolný Kubín and Ružomberok and join the D1.

From Hungary. From Budapest it takes about 3 h 45 min. Your satnav will usually take you via Banská Bystrica and Donovaly to Ružomberok, where you join the D1 towards Liptovský Mikuláš.

From Czechia. The route takes you to Žilina: from the Ostrava area via Čadca, from Brno via Trenčín or Púchov. In Žilina, continue on the D1 towards Martin, Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš.

By train: Liptovský Mikuláš station

Liptovský Mikuláš lies on the main Bratislava - Žilina - Košice railway line. The regional tourism website Visit Liptov lists it, together with Ružomberok, as the main transport hub of the region, with regular trains from Bratislava, Košice and Prague.

• From Bratislava (ZSSK). According to the 2025/2026 timetable of ZSSK, Slovakia’s national rail operator, the Tatran and Kriváň express trains run between Bratislava and Košice every hour during the day, always leaving Bratislava at 32 minutes past the hour. They take approx. 3 h 5 min (Kriváň) to 3 h 25 min (Tatran) to Liptovský Mikuláš.
• From Košice. The same express trains run in the opposite direction, with no change needed.
• From Prague (RegioJet). The Prague - Žilina - Košice line stops in Slovakia at Čadca, Žilina, Vrútky, Ružomberok, Liptovský Mikuláš, Štrba, Poprad, Spišská Nová Ves and Kysak. On the route from Prague via Ostrava and Žilina to Košice, it also has sleeper cars.
• From Prague (Leo Express). Trains on the Prague - Přerov - Ostrava - Bohumín - Prešov route stop at Liptovský Mikuláš. The direct train from Prague takes approx. 6 hours.

The RegioJet and Leo Express timetables are valid until 12 December 2026, after which the new timetable comes into force. Before you travel, check your connection on cp.sk, the Slovak journey planner, or directly with the operator.

From the station to Liptovský Trnovec

From the station it is about 7 km to the cabin. You have three options:

• Suburban bus. Buses run from Liptovský Mikuláš to Liptovský Trnovec. On cp.sk you can search for the train and the bus together, as one journey with a change.
• Taxi. With luggage and children this is the most comfortable option; the drive takes about 15 minutes. Visit Liptov publishes a list of taxi companies in Liptovský Mikuláš.
• Ski & Aqua bus in winter. According to Visit Liptov, these free buses run every 15 minutes in the winter season from boarding points such as the railway station in Liptovský Mikuláš. The stop near the cabin is about 500 m away (a 10-minute walk). Check whether your bus also stops at Liptovský Trnovec in the journey planner on visitliptov.sk.

Airports nearby: Poprad, Kraków, Bratislava

Approximate driving times to the cabin, without breaks or traffic jams:

• Poprad-Tatry: about 60 km, 45 min. The nearest airport, all the way on the D1.
• Košice: about 190 km, 2 h.
• Kraków: about 180 km, 3 h, via Chyżne and Trstená.
• Bratislava: about 300 km, 3 h.
• Vienna: about 350 km, 3.5 h, via Bratislava.
• Budapest: about 260 km, 4 h.

From Bratislava and Košice you can continue by train from the main railway station straight to Liptovský Mikuláš. From the other airports a hire car is more practical, and you will find it handy for day trips around Liptov too.

What to combine it with

Once you are here, you will often leave the car parked. The beach on Liptovská Mara is 50 m from the cabin, and Tatralandia is 5 minutes away by car.
