How to spend a day at Mara
Liptovská Mara is the largest reservoir in Slovakia by volume, and in summer the whole of Liptov revolves around it. A good day by the water does not take much planning. Just split it into time on the water, one short trip ashore and the evening:
- paddleboard, inflatable or kayak and a swim in the morning,
- lunch on a blanket by the water or at the barbecue,
- Havránok, the little church or a bike ride in the afternoon,
- sunset over the water in the evening.
Kamil, our host, adds one tip: bring a paddleboard or some kind of inflatable for the summer, because it is amazing out on Mara.
Morning on the water
From a paddleboard or an inflatable, Mara is a different experience from what you see on the shore. The lake covers almost 27 km² and is surrounded by the Western Tatras and the Low Tatras.
If you do not have your own paddleboard, hire one. Marina Liptov in Bobrovník has single and double kayaks, paddleboards for two, a JUMBO paddleboard for six people and boats. PeZa Šport in Sielnická zátoka bay near Liptovská Sielnica hires out paddleboards, kayaks and a motorboat.
On the water, keep an eye on the wind. Mara is a wide open stretch of water and paddling back against the wind is hard work, so stay close to the shore, especially when it is windy. Children should always wear a life jacket on the water.
Where to swim
With small children, the safest choice is the Liptovský Trnovec beach. It has a lifeguard, a swimming area marked out with buoys, toilets and a car park. According to the village website, a full-day ticket costs €5.50 for adults and €3.50 for children. In the summer season it is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00.
Most of the other beaches around Mara are open to everyone free of charge, but there is usually no lifeguard. The bathing season usually runs from 15 June to 1 September, and the water averages 20.5 °C during that time. We cover all the beaches, the water quality and the temperature in detail in our guide to swimming at Liptovská Mara.
Afternoon: Havránok and the little church
When you have had enough of the water, head to the western end of Mara near Liptovská Sielnica. On the hill above the bay stands the Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum, the first archaeological open-air park in Slovakia. You will see the reconstructed fortifications, dwellings and sanctuary from the Iron Age, and a view over the whole lake.
In 2026 it is open daily from 1 May to 31 October, from 9:00 to 18:00 in July and August. Admission is €4 for adults, and a family with two adults and a child pays €10.
Below Havránok, on the shore, stands the white tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary. It is all that remains of the flooded village of Liptovská Mara.
Or get on a bike
Two loops run around Mara. The shorter one is 36 km and stays close to the water with no long climbs; the big loop is 58 km according to Visit Liptov. With children, the Celtic Expedition route (Keltská výprava) from Vlachy across the dam to the little church and Havránok is a better choice: 10.7 km, 223 m of climbing, about 2 hours.
There is no separate cycle path all the way around the reservoir yet, and parts of the routes run along roads with cars.
Evening by the water
At the end of the day, stay by the water. The north shore has a lovely view of the sun setting over the lake. If you do not feel like cooking, Liptovský Mikuláš is 7 km from Trnovec. Kamil likes going to Route 66 on Garbiarska Street there; you will find more about it in our Tatralandia day trip guide.
The weather at Mara
Kamil says one more thing about Mara: it rarely rains around it, and you can rely on the weather here far more than anywhere else.
The numbers back him up. Mara lies in the Liptov basin, surrounded by mountains. According to the 1991 - 2020 climate normals, Chopok gets almost 1,200 mm of precipitation a year on average. Liptovský Mikuláš, 7 km from Mara, gets around 700 mm according to the Vlastivedný slovník obcí (a Slovak gazetteer of municipalities), which is roughly 40% less.
If the weather does turn, our Liptov itinerary has a rainy-day option for every day. Tatralandia with its covered Tropical Paradise is a few minutes’ drive from Trnovec.
Next time, a whole week by the water
One day at Mara is a good start. If you stay with us, the water is 50 metres away, so you can take the paddleboard out in the morning before breakfast and again in the evening after a trip. The log cabin has a garden with a barbecue, a fireplace and an infrared sauna, and sleeps 8 to 10.
