Liptov Itinerary: A Weekend, 5 or 7 Days at Liptovská Mara
For a weekend in Liptov, Liptovská Mara and the Demänovská valley with Chopok and a cave are enough; for 3 days, add Malinô Brdo and Vlkolínec near Ružomberok. In a week you can also fit in Štrbské Pleso, the Prosiecka valley, a bike ride around the lake and a car-free day. In winter, Jasná, 25 minutes from Liptovská Mara, is the mainstay, with water parks, the Demänovská Cave of Liberty and cross-country skiing for days off the slopes.

How many days do you need in Liptov?
A long weekend of two to three days is enough to see the highlights: Liptovská Mara (Liptovska Mara lake), the Demänovská dolina valley with Chopok and the caves, and the area around Ružomberok with Vlkolínec. With five days you can add the High Tatras and a valley hike. A week is best for a holiday in Liptov, because you can shuffle the days around according to the weather and spend one day simply by the water.
Each day has one main destination and one optional extra that you can add if you have the time and energy left. Places close to each other are on the same day, so you are not driving back and forth. Each day also has a rainy-day alternative. Distances are by car from our cabin in Liptovský Trnovec, on the north shore of Mara.
Two things that are easiest to forget when planning:
- Mondays: the Demänovská Cave of Liberty is closed, and so is the Janko Kráľ Museum in Liptovský Mikuláš outside July and August. Plan your cave day for Tuesday to Sunday.
- Season: Havránok is open from 1 May to 31 October, the Demänovská Ice Cave was only open from 15 May to 15 September in 2026, and the summer cable cars up Chopok ran until 30 September.
You will find more about summer with us on our summer at Liptovská Mara page and about winter on our winter at the cabin page.
Liptov for a weekend or 3 days in summer
For a two-day weekend, the first two days are enough. The third works well as your departure day.
Day 1: Liptovská Mara and Havránok
- Main destination: the beach by the cabin (50 m) or the Liptovský Trnovec beach with a lifeguard (1.5 km). Where to swim and what the water is like is covered in our guide to swimming at Liptovská Mara.
- Optional: in the afternoon, the Celtic hillfort of Havránok (13 km, 20 min) and the little white church below it, right by the water. Two hours are enough for both.
- When it rains: Tatralandia is 2.5 km from the cabin and has the covered Tropical Paradise (Tropický raj).
If you arrive on Friday afternoon, you will at least have time for a walk along the beach and a barbecue in the garden in the evening.
Day 2: The Demänovská valley, Chopok and the caves
- Main destination: take the cable cars from Jasná (21 km, 25 min) via Priehyba up to Chopok and walk a little way along the ridge towards Ďumbier. It is colder up there than by the lake, so bring a jacket for everyone. Whether the cable cars run depends on the wind, so check the Jasná website in the morning.
- Optional: on the way down, one of the Demänovská caves. The Ice Cave (Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa) is 15 km from the cabin and only open in summer; the Cave of Liberty (Demänovská jaskyňa slobody) is 17 km away and open almost all year.
- When it rains: skip Chopok and go straight to the Cave of Liberty. It is 6 - 7 °C inside all year, and rain will not spoil the tour.
Day 3: Ružomberok, Malinô Brdo and Vlkolínec
- Main destination: take the gondola from Hrabovo up to Malinô Brdo (29 km, 35 min) and walk from the top station to Vlkolínec, a UNESCO World Heritage village. It is about 2 km and a little over 45 minutes, mostly downhill. The way back to the cable car is uphill.
- Optional: a stop for cheese at Salaš Krajinka, a sheep farm in Černová near Ružomberok. Likava Castle has been closed for restoration since March 2025, so just look at it from the road below.
- When it rains: Liptovský Mikuláš (7 km, 10 min) with the Janko Kráľ Museum and Jánošík’s underground torture chamber.
Ružomberok lies on the D1 motorway towards Žilina and Bratislava, so this day suits the journey home. Check-out at the cabin is by 10:00: you spend the morning on Malinô Brdo and are on the motorway in the afternoon.
Liptov in 5 days in summer
The first three days stay the same. Add the Tatras and one valley close to the cabin.
Day 4: Štrbské Pleso
- Main destination: Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras (54 km, 50 min via the D1). The loop around the lake is step-free, so you can do it with a pushchair. Fitter walkers can add Popradské pleso or the Skok waterfall; both hikes take half a day. On summer weekends, be at the car park by 9:00.
- Optional: if you come back via Podbanské, stop at the Pribylina open-air museum (27 km from the cabin), home to the church from the flooded village of Liptovská Mara. Allow two to three hours for a visit; last entry is an hour before closing.
- When it rains: do not drive to the Tatras. Thermal Bešeňová (16 km, 20 min) is a better bet.
Day 5: The Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys
- Main destination: the Prosiecka dolina valley (9 km, 15 min) with steel ladders and chains. It is 5 km and about 2 hours to the Svorad plateau. There is no admission fee, you only pay for parking.
- Optional: a swim by the cabin in the afternoon or paddleboarding on Mara. With small children, walk up the Kvačianska dolina valley to the Oblazy watermills instead of the Prosiecka, as there are no ladders there.
- When it rains: the ladders and rocks are wet and slippery. Go to the Jánska dolina valley instead (20 km, 25 min) and the Stanišovská Cave, which you explore with a head torch.
Liptov: a one-week summer programme
For a week, add two days to the five-day plan: one longer trip and one without the car. Keep the water park for a day when the weather lets you down.
Day 6: The Jánska valley or the Roháče mountains
- Main destination for families: the Jánska valley with the Stanišovská Cave, which is open every day all year, and the Kaďa thermal spring in Liptovský Ján, which is free. If you already did the cave on rainy day 5, go to Roháče.
- Main destination for hikers: the loop to the Roháče tarns (Roháčske plesá) from Zverovka (38 km, 55 min). It is about 12 km long and takes 5 - 6 hours. The section from the waterfall to the tarns is closed from 1 November to 15 June.
- When it rains: the Stanišovská Cave works just as well in the rain; move Roháče to another day.
Day 7: By bike around Mara
- Main destination: the cycle route around Liptovská Mara, straight from the cabin. The shorter loop by the water is 36 km and takes half a day. The section from Trnovec to Liptovská Sielnica runs along a road with cars, so ride it in the morning. With children, the Celtic Expedition route (Keltská výprava) from Vlachy (10.7 km) is better.
- Optional: rafting on the canal in Liptovský Mikuláš (8 km, 10 min), which the town recommends from age 10.
- When it rains: Tatralandia, and in the evening the fireplace and the infrared sauna at the cabin.
Liptov in winter: a weekend and a week
Winter weekend
- Day 1: Jasná. The largest ski resort in Slovakia is 21 km from the cabin, 25 minutes by car. You can park for free at the Pavčina Lehota park-and-ride, and a shuttle bus takes you up. Without a car, you can take the free Ski & Aqua bus with a ski pass or the Liptov Region Card; the stop is a 10-minute walk from the cabin. Buy your ski pass online in advance, as it costs more at the ticket desk. Details are in our guide to skiing at Jasná.
- Day 2: off the slopes, or on a small slope with the children. In the morning, the Demänovská Cave of Liberty; in the afternoon, Tatralandia or Bešeňová. If the children are learning to ski, go to Žiarce (14 km) or to Opalisko with its fenced children’s area (16 km).
In winter the evening is half the programme. Light the fireplace (the firewood is free), warm up in the infrared sauna, and your wet things will be dry by morning.
A week in winter
| Day | Main destination | Optional | From the cabin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jasná | evening skiing | 21 km, 25 min |
| 2 | Jasná; with children Žiarce or Opalisko | Tatralandia after skiing | 14 - 21 km |
| 3 | Day off skiing: Demänovská Cave of Liberty | Bešeňová | 17 km, 25 min |
| 4 | Malinô Brdo near Ružomberok | Salaš Krajinka | 29 km, 35 min |
| 5 | Cross-country skiing: Pavčina Lehota or Liptovský Ján | Stanišovská Cave | 15 - 20 km |
| 6 | Štrbské Pleso: a walk around the lake and cross-country skiing | Pribylina open-air museum | 54 km, 50 min |
| 7 | Liptovský Mikuláš | Tatralandia | 7 km, 10 min |
When it is windy or foggy, swap a ski day for day 3 or 7; the caves and the water parks are under cover. If the snow is thin, go cross-country skiing at Jasná in Zadné vody, where the trails lie above 1,200 m, or on the artificial snow at Štrbské Pleso.
If you are staying with us before Christmas, bear two things in mind. The Cave of Liberty is closed from 16 November to 26 December 2026; the Stanišovská Cave is the alternative then. And in winter 2025/26 the Ski & Aqua bus only ran from 26 December to 8 March, so check the timetable for winter 2026/27 on visitliptov.sk.
With small children or a group of friends
With small children
- One bigger trip a day: a trip in the morning, then the beach or the garden in the afternoon and a nap at the cabin.
- Tatralandia is 5 minutes away by car and children under 6 get in free, so it is worth going even for two hours.
- Even small children can manage Malinô Brdo, and up to the age of 5.99 they ride the cable car free. Take them up Chopok from about age 6, and with a jacket. Swap the Prosiecka valley for the Kvačianska valley with a pushchair, and Roháče for the loop around Štrbské pleso.
- Žiarce alpine coaster (14 km): children ride on their own from age 7, younger ones with an older person.
You will find tips by age in our guide to Liptov with kids.
For a group of friends
- Mountains: from Chopok along the ridge to Ďumbier, the Roháče tarns or the bike park on Malinô Brdo.
- Water: rafting, ideally with a full raft, which makes it cheaper per person. Ten people fit into two rafts.
- Evenings: Bešeňová has evening swimming, and in winter the ski bus brings you back from the slopes, so nobody has to drive.
The cabin has 130 m², 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms; it sleeps 8 comfortably and 10 at most. It is not for stag and hen dos or loud parties, but it is perfect for shared dinners by the barbecue and the fireplace.
What to combine it with
Treat the plan as a framework. In Liptov it pays to watch the forecast and swap days around: a sunny day for the mountains, a rainy one underground or in the water. Almost everything in the plan is within half an hour of Mara, so in the evening you are always back by the water.
Bosorka Zrub stands right on the shore of Liptovská Mara in Liptovský Trnovec, and the beach is 50 m from the house. It has a fireplace, an infrared sauna, a garden with a barbecue, a trampoline and parking for 2 cars. We are a local host and nobody pays us for our recommendations.
