Slovakia vignette for winter 2026/27
Slovak motorways use an electronic motorway vignette (diaľničná známka) linked to your car’s registration number, so there is nothing to stick on the windscreen. Prices for cars and vehicle combinations up to 3.5 t are the same in 2026 as in 2025:
- 1-day: €8.10
- 10-day: €10.80
- 30-day: €17.10
- 365-day: €90
Looking for an annual vignette? In Slovakia it is called the 365-day vignette, and it is not valid until the end of the calendar year but for 365 days including the day you choose as the first day when buying. Bought with validity from 20 December 2026, it is valid until 19 December 2027. The first day can be the day of payment or later, but no more than 60 days after payment and no later than 31 December of the year the vignette is issued for.
With the shorter vignettes, two things are worth noting:
- A 1-day vignette is valid until 23:59:59 on the chosen day, not for 24 hours from purchase. If you arrive on Friday evening and go home on Sunday, two 1-day vignettes cost €16.20 and a 10-day one €10.80.
- The second thing concerns the holidays: a 10-day or 30-day vignette bought in December is also valid in January until its period runs out. A 10-day vignette from 30 December 2026 is valid until 8 January 2027.
As of 2 November 2026, Národná diaľničná spoločnosť (NDS), the state company that runs Slovakia’s motorways, had not published prices for 2027, and no amendment has been approved yet to the government regulation that sets them. NDS presented the 2026 edition on 4 November 2025, a month earlier than in other years. When the 2027 prices come out, we will add them here.
On the way to us you almost always need a vignette. The Liptovský Mikuláš exit is on the tolled D1 section Ivachnová - Poprad-Západ. The Lietavská Lúčka - Turany section with the Višňové tunnel is tolled too, and from Bratislava the whole Bratislava-Východ - Hričovské Podhradie section. The Ružomberok bypass (Hubová - Ivachnová) is not on the list of tolled sections at eznamka.sk, the official vignette website. We write more about it in our article Ružomberok bypass.
Where to buy the vignette and what to watch out for
Officially, the Slovak vignette is sold only at eznamka.sk, in the eZnamka app and at points of sale. These are at border crossings, at selected petrol stations and, since March 2026, also at selected branches of Slovenská pošta, the Slovak post office.
When you search online, you will also come across other websites. NDS has warned about them repeatedly:
- Resellers add their own fees to the price. According to NDS, drivers overpaid more than €4 million through them in 2025, on average about €6 extra for a 1-day vignette and as much as €19 for a 365-day one.
- In January 2026 NDS warned about a fake website that closely copied the design of the official one. Buyers paid but never received a vignette.
- If you buy through a reseller, you may not get a confirmation from NDS, and making a complaint is more complicated.
If you are towing a trailer and the combination weighs up to 3.5 t in total, the vignette for the car is enough. Over 3.5 t the trailer needs its own vignette too, at the same prices as the car. Since 1 January 2025 the obligation applies to cars from any country, including cars with Ukrainian registration plates, which used to be exempt.
When buying, double-check the registration number and the first day of validity. You are responsible for the details being correct. Until you have the payment confirmation, usually by e-mail, you do not have a valid vignette.
Winter tyres: when they are compulsory
For cars, the Slovak Road Traffic Act sets no date. What counts is the state of the road. If the road is covered with a continuous layer of snow, ice or frost, a car or a van up to 3.5 t may only drive with winter tyres on all axles. Tyres with the mountain symbol (a mountain with a snowflake) are accepted, as are those marked M+S, M.S or M&S.
The law also says that drivers must prepare in advance if snow, ice or frost can be expected on the route at that time of year. In Liptov in winter that is almost always the case, even when you set off on a dry road in Bratislava or Kraków. The fixed period from 15 November to 31 March applies only to lorries and buses, which must have winter tyres at least on one driven axle.
Other rules worth knowing:
- When winter tyres are compulsory, the main tread grooves must be at least 3 mm deep. Otherwise 1.6 mm is enough, but in snow that is too little.
- Studded tyres are banned in Slovakia.
- Before you set off, you must clear the car of ice and snow that could come loose while driving, including from the roof.
On the way through Czechia, Poland or Hungary their own rules apply, so check them before you leave.
Snow chains: where you need them
A car does not have to carry chains at all times. They are compulsory where there is a mandatory Snow chains sign (Snehové reťaze). From that sign up to the End of snow chains sign (Koniec snehových reťazí), you must have chains or another equivalent device at least on the wheels of one driven axle. Without them you may not drive past the sign.
Chains may only be used on a road covered with a sufficient layer of snow or ice, not on dry tarmac. You may only fit them on tyres of the size they are made for according to the instructions, and in line with the car manufacturer’s conditions. Only heavy goods vehicles have to carry them as standard equipment from 15 November to 31 March.
If you are heading into the mountains or over passes, pack the chains and practise fitting them at home. It is hard to learn in the dark and in the snow at the side of the road.
Compulsory equipment and lights
A decree sets the compulsory equipment for a car, and it does not change in winter:
- a warning triangle,
- a reflective vest or other reflective clothing within reach of the driver’s seat,
- a first-aid kit, and for a car registered in another country a first-aid kit valid in that country is enough,
- a spare wheel with a wheel wrench and jack, or a tyre repair kit or run-flat tyres.
Lights must be on all year round, day and night. Dipped headlights or daytime running lights are enough, but daytime running lights only in good visibility. When it is snowing or foggy, switch on your dipped headlights. Front and rear fog lights may only be used in fog, snowfall or rain.
In winter it also pays to have an ice scraper, a snow brush, winter screenwash and a charged phone in the car. None of it is compulsory, but you will be glad of it if traffic comes to a standstill in the snow.
Closures and restrictions in autumn and winter 2026/27
The situation as of 2 November 2026, according to Slovenská správa ciest, the Slovak road administration, and NDS:
- On the Liptovský Mikuláš motorway feeder road, one lane and the hard shoulder are closed until 8 November 2026 while the bridge expansion joints are replaced.
- On road II/584 from Liptovský Mikuláš to Liptovský Trnovec, in the section from Ondrašovská street, traffic has been running in a single lane in alternating directions since 15 October 2026, because a petrol station is being connected there. The road administration lists the restriction as valid until December 2027.
- From the east: between Liptovský Hrádok and Hybe, the road surface is being repaired in one lane until 8 November 2026. On 16 - 20 November 2026 the road administration reports closures of the D1 section Mengusovce - Poprad-Západ for the installation of fans in the Bôrik tunnel, with the diversion along road I/18 via Svit.
- From Poland: in Trstená, road I/59 is closed on 6 - 7 November 2026 for a public event, between Nábrežie Ľ. Štúra and SNP street. The signed diversion runs along Malý rad, Zápotočná, J. Hertela and Hattalova streets.
NDS has not announced any further motorway closures for the winter in its press releases so far. According to its release of 21 October 2026, it has almost 35,000 tonnes of grit, more than 700 people and over 300 machines ready for winter maintenance.
Where to check road conditions before you leave:
- zjazdnost.sk, the road conditions website of Slovenská správa ciest. Its map shows the state of the road surface including mountain passes, the type of snow, places with black ice, the weather, reduced visibility and traffic restrictions. In winter the road administration also publishes regular road condition reports there, and its dispatch centre runs non-stop from 1 November to 31 March.
- ndsas.sk, the Dopravné informácie (traffic information) section, with a map of restrictions on motorways and expressways.
- The NDS app Pomoc na diaľnici (Motorway Help) for iOS and Android, with verified reports from all motorway sections. From the app you can also call the Motorway Patrol (Diaľničná patrola) directly, on 0800 100 007.
From Czechia, Poland and Hungary in winter
Times are approximate, without breaks or traffic jams. In snow, allow extra time.
From Czechia the route leads to Žilina, from the Ostrava region via Čadca, from Brno via Trenčín or Púchov. After Žilina you go through the Višňové tunnel towards Martin, between Turany and Hubová along road I/18 through the Váh valley via Šútovo, Kraľovany and Ľubochňa, and from Hubová back on the D1 past Ružomberok. From Žilina it is about 100 km, roughly 1 hr 15 min. You need a vignette for the Lietavská Lúčka - Turany and Ivachnová - Poprad-Západ sections. If you join the D1 at Trenčín or Púchov, you also pay for the section to Hričovské Podhradie.
From Poland it is about 3 hours from Kraków and about 3 hr 15 min from Katowice. You cross the border at Trstená (via Chyżne) or at Suchá Hora (via Chochołów). From there you have two options:
- The quick link between Orava and Liptov is road 584 via Zuberec, the Huty pass and Liptovské Matiašovce straight to Liptovská Mara, but it climbs over the mountains.
- If you would rather avoid Huty in winter, go round via Dolný Kubín, join the D1 at the Likavka junction and carry on to Liptovský Mikuláš. You no longer drive through Ružomberok, but you do need a vignette for the section from Ivachnová.
From Hungary it is about 3 hr 45 min from Budapest. Your satnav will usually take you via Banská Bystrica and Donovaly to Ružomberok and from there onto the D1. Donovaly is a mountain pass, and in winter it is worth checking the road conditions there before you leave. If you drive from Zvolen to Banská Bystrica on the R1 expressway, that is tolled too.
There is more about routes, trains and airports in our article Getting to Liptovský Trnovec.
The last stretch to the cabin
Leave the D1 at the Liptovský Mikuláš exit (no. 42) and follow the signs for Tatralandia and Liptovský Trnovec. Check-in is from 16:00, and we send you the code for the key box in advance.
It is better to put the cabin’s GPS coordinates into your satnav (49.1100234, 19.5418718), as in winter guests often arrive in the dark.
There are two parking spaces in the enclosed grounds at the cabin. Once you are here, you will often leave the car where it is. Jasná is 21 km from us, about 25 minutes by car. In winter you can also get there on the Ski & Aqua bus, which is free with a ski pass, and the stop is about 10 minutes’ walk from the cabin. We have covered ski passes, car parks and the ski bus in our article Skiing at Jasná, and everything about winter at the cabin on the page Winter at Jasná and Tatralandia.
You can check free winter dates with a no-obligation enquiry. We checked the closures on 2 November 2026. When NDS publishes the 2027 vignette prices or announces new restrictions, we will add them.
Frequently asked questions
How much is an annual motorway vignette in Slovakia?
The annual vignette is called the 365-day vignette and costs €90 for cars up to 3.5 t. It is valid for 365 days including the day you choose as the first day when buying, not until the end of the calendar year. The first day can be at the latest 60 days after payment and no later than 31 December of the year the vignette is issued for.
When does the 2027 Slovakia vignette go on sale and how much will it cost?
As of 2 November 2026, NDS had published neither the prices nor the start of sales of the 2027 edition. Prices are set by Government Regulation No. 232/2024 Coll., and no amendment to it has been approved yet. NDS presented the 2026 edition on 4 November 2025, a month earlier than in other years. For a trip over the holidays a 2026 vignette will do: a 10-day or 30-day vignette bought in December is also valid in January.
Do I need winter tyres in Slovakia?
For cars, the law sets no fixed date. Winter tyres with the mountain symbol or the M+S, M.S or M&S marking are required on all axles whenever the road is covered with a continuous layer of snow, ice or frost. You also have to be prepared for it whenever it can be expected on your route at that time of year, and in winter in Liptov that is almost always. The period from 15 November to 31 March applies to lorries and buses.
When do I need snow chains in Slovakia?
Wherever there is a mandatory Snow chains sign. You must have chains or another equivalent device at least on the wheels of one driven axle, up to the End of snow chains sign. You may only use them on a road with a sufficient layer of snow or ice. Only heavy goods vehicles have to carry them as compulsory equipment from 15 November to 31 March.
What if I have driven onto the motorway without a vignette?
According to NDS, you can still buy one on the same day until midnight, at eznamka.sk or in the eZnamka app. It is not worth relying on, as the police can stop and check your car on the motorway. Watch the start of validity too: if you chose a later date when buying, the vignette is not valid until then.
Do cars with Ukrainian number plates need a motorway vignette too?
Yes. Since 1 January 2025 a vignette is required regardless of the country where the car is registered. The exemption for cars with Ukrainian registration plates, which applied from February 2022, has ended.
