Where to go cross-country skiing in Liptov
The cross-country trails in Liptov are not one big ski area. They are groomed by the villages and local cross-country ski clubs, and in the classic resorts also with snowmobiles and snow groomers. So it pays to know where to go depending on the snow and on how far you want to ski.
Overview from Bosorka Zrub (by car, approximate):
- Pavčina Lehota: about 15 km, 25 minutes. Loops around the village and via Lazisko, on the flat below the Low Tatras.
- Liptovský Ján: about 17 km, 20 minutes. A short, easy loop at the mouth of the Jánska valley.
- Jasná, Zadné vody: 21 km, 25 minutes. Loops above 1,200 m with a fairly good chance of snow.
- Liptovská Kokava - Podbanské: about 29 km to Kokava (30 minutes), about 36 km to Podbanské (35 minutes). The longest trails, below the Western Tatras.
- Štrbské Pleso: 54 km, 50 minutes. An area with artificial snow for when there is none elsewhere.
Visit Liptov also lists other cross-country routes in its database, for example at Čertovica, in the Žiarska valley, at Malinô Brdo or from Hrabovo to the Vlkolínec meadows. Check the current conditions before you set off (more below).
Liptovský Ján and Pavčina Lehota: close to the cabin
Liptovský Ján
According to Visit Liptov, the loop is 3.5 km long and easy. It starts by the SOREA Máj hotel, runs alongside the road to Závažná Poruba and comes back across the meadows by Hrádok hill. The village grooms the trail as the weather allows.
It is a good choice for your first hours on cross-country skis or for a shorter round before lunch.
If you want something warm afterwards, there are thermal pools in the Jánska valley; more in our guide to the Jánska valley.
Pavčina Lehota
The village at the entrance to the Demänovská valley has several loops: a loop to the playing field, a long loop around the village and a loop via Lazisko, Pavčina Lehota and Žiarce. The last one is 4.3 km long and Visit Liptov rates it as moderately difficult. In its report of 14 January 2026, Visit Liptov listed 10 to 20 cm of snow and a groomed track here. Of all the trails in this guide, Pavčina Lehota is the closest to the cabin.
Demänovská valley: loops at Jasná above 1,200 m
When the snow is running out down in Mikuláš, it is worth heading higher up the Demänovská valley. At the Jasná Zadné vody area there are two loops, a sports loop and a touring loop. Both are moderately difficult and run above 1,200 m, so according to Visit Liptov there is a fairly good chance of enough snow here.
- The touring loop is 3 km long and runs on natural snow, which is groomed regularly.
- It climbs and descends 88 m and takes about half an hour.
- One lap is enough to warm up; for training, do two or three.
If some of the family ski downhill and some go cross-country, Jasná is a good compromise. The downhill skiers head for the pistes, the cross-country skiers for Zadné vody, and you have lunch together. We cover ski passes and parking in our guide to skiing at Jasná.
Podbanské and Liptovská Kokava: the longest trails below the Tatras
Below the Western Tatras you will find the most cross-country skiing. According to an overview by Rezort pri jazere, there are over 70 km of groomed trails around Podbanské, and almost all of them are free or for a voluntary contribution. The trails are groomed by volunteers from the cross-country ski club in Liptovská Kokava. You put your contribution in the cash box or pay it into the bank account shown at the trails.
The best known is the trail from Liptovská Kokava to Podbanské:
- The groomed track is 9 km long and easy, and it also suits beginners and families with children.
- According to Visit Liptov, the whole route is 9.8 km with 170 m of climbing.
- Allow about two hours.
You can also reach the trails from the open-air museum in Pribylina: behind the Museum of the Liptov Village, turn right and cross the footbridge. The trip combines well with a visit to the open-air museum; more in our guide to the Pribylina open-air museum.
Štrbské Pleso: artificial snow all winter
The SNOW cross-country skiing area at Štrbské Pleso has 8 loops from 1.4 to 5 km long. Thanks to snowmaking, the stadium and the loops of up to 2.5 km can be used throughout the winter season, and the Andelova trail has guaranteed artificial snow over a length of 2 km. You can join the trails at three points: A by the main stadium, B below the Patria hotel and C above the FIS hotel.
Organised groups and sports clubs pay the area operator fees according to its price list. Whether individuals pay in winter 2026/27, and how much, we could not find when checking, so look at strbskepleso.sk before you go.
It is the furthest of all the trails in this guide, but when a thaw leaves Liptov with a green December, you can at least ski the snow-covered loops at Štrbské Pleso. A day on cross-country skis combines well with a walk around the lake; you will find tips in our guide to Štrbské Pleso in a day.
What it costs and where to check trail conditions
- Fees: almost all the trails near Podbanské are free or for a voluntary contribution. For the other trails in Liptov, we found no official fee when checking.
- Trail conditions: on its page Stav bežeckých tratí v regióne Liptov, Visit Liptov publishes snow depth, temperature and grooming status. It updates the page regularly during the season, and the date of the last update is at the top.
- When to go: the track is best in the morning after grooming. After a warm day and a frosty night the track tends to be hard and fast; with children, wait until it softens.
- With children: for the first time, try the short loop in Liptovský Ján or in Pavčina Lehota. Once the children get the hang of it, you can move on to the 9 km trail to Podbanské.
What to combine it with
If part of the family prefers downhill skiing, read our overview of ski areas for children and beginners. For a rest after skiing, Tatralandia is 2.5 km from the cabin, and there is more about winter with us on our winter at the cabin page.
Bosorka Zrub stands on the shore of Liptovská Mara, so in the morning you are in Pavčina Lehota or Liptovský Ján within a quarter of an hour, and below the Tatras within three quarters of an hour. After skiing you can warm up by the fireplace (firewood is free) and in the infrared sauna. Check available winter dates by sending a no-obligation enquiry. We are a local host and nobody pays us for our recommendations.
