Which ski area to choose for children and beginners
For your first days on skis you do not need 50 km of pistes. You need a gentle slope, a short lift, an instructor and the option to stop after two hours without feeling you have thrown away an expensive ski pass. That is why it is better to start at the smaller ski areas around Liptovský Mikuláš and go to Jasná only once your child can stop on their own.
An overview from Bosorka Zrub (by car, approximate):
- Ski Žiarce, Pavčina Lehota: 14 km, about 20 minutes. A small ski area with a children’s lift, a ski school and evening skiing.
- Ski Opalisko, Závažná Poruba: 15 km, about 15 minutes. A fenced children’s area, and children up to 110 cm ski free (2025/26).
- Malinô Brdo, Ružomberok: 29 km, about 35 minutes. A bigger ski area for children who can already manage a drag lift.
- Jasná, Biela Púť: 21 km, about 25 minutes. The MAXILAND children’s ski school, for when you want to ski the big slopes yourself.
When we checked on 21 October 2026 we found no confirmed price lists for winter 2026/27, so all the prices here are from winter 2025/26. Check them on the ski areas’ websites before you travel.
Ski Žiarce in Pavčina Lehota: the closest to the cabin
Ski Žiarce is in Pavčina Lehota at the foot of the Low Tatras, close to the entrance to the Demänovská dolina valley. It has four drag lifts with a capacity of 2,345 people an hour and snowmaking. For parents with small children there is a separate children’s lift.
There is a ski school and equipment hire on site, and the car park is within 300 m of the lifts. For children who get bored of skiing after an hour, there is a sledging slope and a natural ice rink next to the ski area. In the evening you can ski here under floodlights.
What it costs: Žiarce does not publish its winter price list on its website, and as of 21 October 2026 ziarce.sk only shows the price list for the alpine coaster. The older ski pass prices you will find around the internet are from 2014 and 2019, so we do not quote them. Check the price directly with the ski area.
Žiarce is best for the first two or three days. Spend the morning on the slope with an instructor and the afternoon resting at the cabin or at the water park. From the cabin you are here in about 20 minutes, so there is no need to rush, either in the morning or on the way home.
Ski Opalisko in Závažná Poruba: a separate children’s area
Opalisko is on the hill above Závažná Poruba, east of Liptovský Mikuláš. It has 3.3 km of pistes and a separate fenced children’s area for the youngest. Children learn there without fast skiers rushing past them.
Prices in the 2025/26 main season:
- 1 day: adults €34, juniors €29, children €25
- 4 hours: adults €29, juniors €26, children €23
- 2 days: adults €60, juniors €52, children €44
- children up to 110 cm accompanied by a paying adult skied free
The resort is preparing online ski pass sales on its new website, skiopalisko.sk. In the evening, floodlights shine on three pistes: Fajka, Kücbiel and the children’s slope. In winter 2025/26 evening skiing ran on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 17:00 to 21:00, and every day during the Christmas and spring school holidays.
With children under six, a four-hour pass is enough. They rarely last longer anyway, and you save €5 on each adult pass.
Malinô Brdo near Ružomberok: once your child can manage a drag lift
Malinô Brdo above Ružomberok has 9 pistes. You go up by cable car from Hrabovo. It is a good next step once your child rides a drag lift on their own and you want more variety, but not yet the whole of Jasná.
Prices from winter 2025/26 (day pass):
- off-season (until 25 December 2025 and from 9 March 2026): adults €28 at the ticket desk, €26 in the online shop
- main season (7 January - 8 March 2026): adults €41 at the ticket desk, €38 in the online shop
- children in the main season: €26 at the ticket desk, €22 in the online shop
Online the pass is €2 to €4 cheaper per person per day. Two adults with two children therefore save €14 a day in the main season. As of 21 October 2026 the resort had not published its day pass prices for winter 2026/27; so far only the Magická sezónka 26/27 season pass is on sale. Check evening skiing and children’s course prices on skipark.sk. You will find more about the resort in summer and winter in our guide to Malinô Brdo.
From the cabin it is about 29 km, most of it on the D1 motorway.
Jasná: Biela Púť and the MAXILAND children’s ski school
If you want to ski yourself and put the children in ski school for a few hours, go to Biela Púť at Jasná. This is where the MAXILAND children’s ski school (Tatry Motion) is.
- Group courses are for children aged 5 to 11.
- One lesson lasts 1 hour 50 minutes.
- Younger children from the age of 3 can have a private lesson with an instructor.
In winter 2025/26 there was also evening skiing at Biela Púť: on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 18:00 to 21:00 on the Chaletová, Biela Púť and Happy End pistes. For winter 2026/27 Jasná has announced more floodlit pistes, 5.7 km in total. A child’s pass (6 - 12) cost at most €50 a day at the ticket desk and was cheaper online via Gopass. We cover prices, parking and the ski bus in detail in our guide to skiing at Jasná.
Starting out with children: practical tips
- Do not buy a full-day pass on the first day. Four hours is enough, even for an adult who spends the whole time standing next to their child on the slope.
- Spend the first hours with an instructor. Children listen to a stranger better than to their parents. Meanwhile you can have a coffee or a few runs.
- Go in the morning. The snow is groomed in the morning and children have more energy. After lunch the small slopes tend to get busier.
- Buy ski passes online in advance where the ski area offers it (Opalisko, Malinô Brdo, Jasná). At the ticket desk you pay more and queue with children in ski boots.
- A helmet and spare gloves. Wet gloves are the most common reason a child wants to go home after an hour.
What to combine it with
If nobody feels like skiing or the wind is up, Tatralandia is 2.5 km from the cabin, with indoor pools open all year. You will find more winter and summer tips for children in our guide to Liptov with kids, and for those who prefer cross-country skiing we have an overview of cross-country trails in Liptov. More about winter with us is on our winter at the cabin page.
After skiing, the children can warm up at Bosorka Zrub by the fireplace (firewood is free) and in the infrared sauna. Wet things dry overnight, and in the morning you are back on the slope in 15 to 20 minutes. The log cabin sleeps 8 to 10 people, so two families with skis fit in easily.
