Why come to Liptov in autumn
October and November are quiet months in Liptov. The summer season is over, the ski season has not started yet, and the main sights are still open. You do not queue at the water park, you meet only a few people on the valley trails and accommodation is easier to find.
One exception: the autumn school holidays. In the 2026/27 school year they fall on 29 and 30 October in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic. If you can, come in mid-October or early November, outside the weekend.
In autumn, expect shorter days and cold mornings. Set off for the ridges early and with time to spare, so that you are back down before dark.
What is open after the season
All year:
- Tatralandia: from 1 September 2026 Sunday - Thursday 10:00 - 20:00, Friday and Saturday 10:00 - 21:00. It is 2.5 km from the cabin and its covered Tropical Paradise is 30 °C all year round. More in our guide to Tatralandia prices.
- Bešeňová with its thermal water, 16 km from the cabin.
- The Pribylina open-air museum with the church from the flooded village of Liptovská Mara.
- The Janko Kráľ Museum in Liptovský Mikuláš with Jánošík’s torture chamber.
- The Demänovská Cave of Liberty from Tuesday to Sunday, with tours at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00. It is closed on 1 November and from 24 to 31 December; check the tour days in the calendar on ssj.sk before you go. The Demänovská Ice Cave has been closed since 16 September.
Only until a certain date:
- The Havránok open-air museum until 31 October 2026, in October daily 9:00 - 16:00. It is 13 km from the cabin. More in our guide to Havránok.
- The Važecká Cave: from 1 September to 30 November 2026 Tuesday - Sunday, tours at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00.
Closed: Likava Castle is closed for restoration (as of 1 October 2026).
Cable cars at Jasná in autumn
The summer season of the cable cars up Chopok ended on 30 September in 2026. How they will run in October and November 2026, Jasná will publish on its cable car operation page.
For orientation, this is what autumn 2025 looked like:
- from 4 to 26 October the cable cars ran at weekends from both the north and the south side,
- 27 - 29 October the north side only: Biela Púť - Priehyba and Priehyba - Chopok,
- during the autumn school holidays, 30 October - 2 November, both north and south,
- in operation from 8:30 to 15:00 at half-hour intervals, with the last ride down from Chopok at 15:00.
Operation always depends on the weather, so check the status in the morning before you set off.
Trail closures in the Tatras from 1 November
In the Tatra National Park (TANAP), hiking trails are closed for the season from 1 November to 31 May. The reason is the protection of nature and wildlife. The end date of 31 May is set by the TANAP visitor rules from 2023; older sources still give 15 June.
What is closed:
- trails that end on summits,
- trails through valleys without a high-mountain hut that is open all year.
This also applies to the Western Tatras with the Roháče mountains, which are the closest to the cabin. If you are planning a hike in the Tatras, do it by the end of October. Which trails stay open is listed on tanap.sk.
In the Low Tatras the winter rules are milder. Some sections do have their own seasonal closure, though; you will find the list on the website of the Low Tatras National Park administration (NAPANT). There may be snow and ice on the ridge in October and November, so for Chopok or Ďumbier take warm layers, a head torch and sturdy footwear.
Autumn hikes near the cabin
These are hikes whose times and climbs we have checked:
- The Prosiecka valley to Svorad: 5 km, about 2 hours, 395 m of climbing. The full loop via the Kvačianska valley is 18 km, 6:30 h and 729 m. There are steel ladders and chains on the route, which are slippery after rain. About 9 km from the cabin. More in our guide to the Kvačianska and Prosiecka valleys.
- Poludnica from Závažná Poruba: 963 m of climbing, around 4:30 h there and back. Závažná Poruba is about 13 km from the cabin via Liptovský Mikuláš.
With small children, the best autumn option is the Kvačianska valley to the Oblazy watermills, where the route is gentler than through the Prosiecka valley.
Evenings by the fireplace and in the infrared sauna
Autumn has one advantage you will not use in summer: the fireplace. At the cabin the firewood is free, so after a hike all you need to do is light it. The infrared sauna helps with frozen feet, and both bathrooms have a bathtub.
Liptovská Mara is peaceful in autumn. You will not be swimming any more, but a morning walk along the beach, 50 m from the house, is part of an autumn stay.
