Liptov on a Rainy Day: Caves, Water Parks and Museums

When it rains in Liptov, go underground or into warm water. The Demänovská Cave of Liberty is 6 - 7 °C all year round and in 2026 the standard tour costs €15 for adults, Tatralandia has its covered Tropical Paradise at 30 °C and Bešeňová has thermal water. For a rainy morning, the Janko Kráľ Museum in Liptovský Mikuláš is enough, but outside summer the caves and the museum are closed on Mondays.

Caves: underground, the rain makes no difference

When it is pouring outside, the best plan is to go underground. The temperature in a cave never changes and the rain will not spoil your tour. Bring a jacket and sturdy shoes, as the paths tend to be damp.

The Demänovská Cave of Liberty (Demänovská jaskyňa slobody) is 17 km from the cabin, about 25 minutes by car. Inside it is 6 - 7 °C. According to the Slovak Caves Administration, the following applies in 2026:

  • the standard tour takes 60 minutes and costs €15 for adults, €14 for students and seniors and €8 for children aged 4 to 15,
  • the long tour takes 100 minutes and costs €24, €22 and €12; it only runs with at least 10 people,
  • outside summer, tours are at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00, in summer every hour from 9:00 to 16:00,
  • it is closed on Mondays, and also over the holidays on 1 January, 1 November and from 24 to 31 December; you will find the tour days in the calendar on ssj.sk.

You can only visit the cave with a guide at fixed times. On a rainy day, when everyone else has the same idea, be at the ticket desk in good time.

You will find more about both Demänovská caves and how to choose a tour in our guide to the Demänovská caves.

The Demänovská Ice Cave (Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa) is only open in season, in 2026 from 15 May to 15 September. The tour takes 45 minutes and it is 0.4 - 3 °C inside. So in autumn and winter, that leaves the Cave of Liberty.

The Važecká Cave near Važec is short: the tour takes 25 minutes and covers 235 m. From 1 September to 30 November 2026 there are tours from Tuesday to Sunday at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00. Overviews give admission as €10 for adults and €5 for children aged 4 to 15; the current price list is on ssj.sk. It is a good choice for children who would not last through an hour-long tour. It is about 40 km from the cabin, around 35 minutes by car on the motorway.

Water parks: Tatralandia and Bešeňová

A water park is a sure bet in any weather. Both water parks in Liptov are open all year and have the same opening hours and prices. From 1 September 2026 they are open:

  • Sunday to Thursday 10:00 - 20:00,
  • Friday and Saturday 10:00 - 21:00,
  • during the autumn school holidays, 23 - 31 October 2026, daily 10:00 - 21:00.

As of 21 October 2026, prices and opening hours after 20 December 2026 had not been published yet.

Tatralandia is 2.5 km from the cabin, 5 minutes by car. On a rainy day the most important part is Tropical Paradise, a covered hall at 30 °C all year round. For visits from 21 October to 20 December 2026, a full-day Aqua Ticket costs adults €36 online and €40 at the ticket desk, and children under 6 get in free. Prices vary, and online works out cheaper. More details in our guide to Tatralandia prices.

Bešeňová is 16 km from the cabin, about 20 minutes by car. It is built around thermal water that rises from a depth of 1,987 m at a temperature of 60.5 °C. A full-day ticket costs the same as at Tatralandia. For a shorter swim, the 3-hour Aqua Ticket is enough: for visits until 20 December 2026 it costs adults €32 online and €34 at the ticket desk. More in our guide to Bešeňová.

Can’t decide? School-age children and slides: Tatralandia. A quiet soak in thermal water: Bešeňová.

Museums in Liptovský Mikuláš

Liptovský Mikuláš is 7 km from the cabin. Everything is under one roof and close together, so it is a good plan for a rainy morning.

  • The Janko Kráľ Museum: the exhibition Chapters from the History of the Town (Kapitoly z histórie mesta), with the poet’s memorial room. Adults €4, children €2.
  • Jánošík’s torture chamber and courtroom in the museum’s basement. Jánošík, the legendary Slovak outlaw, was tried in Mikuláš in March 1713. Adults €2, children €1. This is usually what children find most interesting.

From 1 September to 30 June the museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 - 18:00, on Sunday only 10:00 - 12:00, and it is closed on Monday. In July and August it is open every day 10:00 - 18:00. We have put together a full half-day plan for the town in our guide to Liptovský Mikuláš.

Indoor attractions in Mikuláš: Fantázia park, LuminaVerse, Ilusia

Parents often ask about these three on forums. All of them are in Liptovský Mikuláš, 7 km from the cabin, and the rain does not bother them. Prices and opening hours are taken from their websites as of 24 October 2026.

Fantázia park at Tehliarska 158 is an amusement park for children, and all of it is under a roof. Its main figure is the Liptov Giant (Liptovský obor), a statue of a ten-year-old boy more than 10 m tall. Around it there is the Chrobáčikovo area for smaller children, a fire station, a model railway, a carousel, a climbing wall, bumper cars and moving dinosaurs.

  • A full-day ticket costs €26 for a child under 16 (including 2 tokens for the carousel or the cars) and €15 for an adult; children under 2 get in free.
  • The three-hour ticket is only €2 cheaper (€24 and €13) and every additional hour or part of an hour costs €5, so with children who are hard to drag away, the full-day ticket is worth it.
  • Families do not need to book, but when the play area is full, entry may be restricted for a while.
  • Outside school holidays it is only open on Friday 14:00 - 19:00 and on Saturday and Sunday 10:00 - 19:00; during school holidays and on public holidays it is open daily 10:00 - 19:00. You will find the exact days on the park’s website.

LuminaVerse at Revolučná 739, by the Retail Park and the BILLA shopping centre on the road to Tatralandia, is a light-themed fun park with more than 28 rooms. There is a ball pit, a laser tunnel, a hall of mirrors, karaoke, an arcade, disco skating and a Floor is lava game. Some of the rooms change once a month, and all attractions are included in the ticket.

  • According to the operator’s price list, a standard ticket from age 4 costs €15, a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children under 17 costs €48, and children under 4 get in free.
  • Allow about 90 minutes.
  • You cannot book an entry time; you buy your ticket online or on the spot, where you may have to wait a little.
  • The hall is not heated, so a sweatshirt comes in handy.
  • It is open Monday to Friday 14:00 - 19:00 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 - 19:00, and from 1 November 2026 a winter exhibition is planned.

According to the town, even teenagers will not be bored here, with karaoke, the arcade and skating.

The Ilusia gallery at Zápotockého 4659 is a world of optical illusions and 3D paintings that you pose in for photos: on the Moon, on Platform 9 ¾ or in Einstein’s bubble. A visit takes 45 to 60 minutes, and you walk around in socks only. It is open every day 10:00 - 18:00. Adults pay €12, children aged 3 to 12, seniors and disabled visitors (ZŤP) €8, children under 3 nothing, and a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children costs €35.

The gallery recommends booking ahead, as demand is highest on rainy days.

According to the town, it has step-free access. If you are coming with a pushchair, ask when booking whether you can take it into the exhibition too.

Ilusia and LuminaVerse are open on Mondays too, when the caves and, outside summer, the Janko Kráľ Museum are closed. With the Liptov Region Card, Ilusia gives a 12% discount and LuminaVerse, according to Visit Liptov, 20% off the standard ticket, not the family ticket.

Watch out for Mondays and Sundays

A rainy day is most easily ruined by the calendar.

  • Monday: the Demänovská Cave of Liberty and the Važecká Cave are closed, and so is the Janko Kráľ Museum outside July and August. That leaves the water parks and, in Mikuláš, Ilusia and LuminaVerse.
  • Sunday outside summer: the museum in Mikuláš is only open in the morning, until 12:00.
  • Over the holidays: the Demänovská Cave of Liberty is closed on 1 January, 1 November and from 24 to 31 December. Check the tour days in the calendar on ssj.sk before you go.

If it rains several days in a row, spread things out: one day the cave and the museum, the next the water park. Go to the cave in the morning and the water park in the afternoon. Warm water is a nice way to end the day, and from the cabin Tatralandia is only 5 minutes away.

A day at the cabin by the fireplace and in the infrared sauna

Sometimes the best plan is not to drive anywhere. The cabin has 130 m², so even ten people will not feel cramped.

  • Fireplace: the firewood is free, just add another log.
  • Infrared sauna: warms you up after a walk in the rain or after a cave at 6 °C.
  • Children’s corner and Wi-Fi: for the children when there is nowhere to go outside.
  • A soak in the bath: both bathrooms have a bathtub.

When the rain stops for a while, the water is 50 m away. For a short walk along the beach, a raincoat and wellies are all you need.

What to combine it with

If it clears up after the rain, go for a short hike or down to the water. For families we have put together an overview, Liptov with kids, with tips for every kind of weather.

And if it rains all weekend, never mind. The log cabin has a fireplace, an infrared sauna and room for the whole family. We are a local host and nobody pays us for our recommendations.
