Where the Prosiecka and Kvačianska valley loop goes

The Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys (Prosiecka dolina and Kvačianska dolina) are two neighbouring limestone valleys in the Choč Mountains (Chočské vrchy), north of Liptovská Mara. They are linked by a loop that starts and finishes in the village of Prosiek:

Prosiek - Prosiecka valley - Svorad - Veľké Borové - Kvačianska valley - Oblazy mills - Kvačany - Prosiek

  • length: 18 km,
  • time: around 6 hours 30 minutes of walking,
  • climbing: 729 m,
  • trail markings: blue first, then red and yellow.

It is an easy full-day hike with no big hill on it. Most of the climbing is up the Prosiecka valley to the Svorad plateau; then you walk across meadows to Veľké Borové, and in the Kvačianska valley it is all downhill. Prosiek and Kvačany are neighbouring villages, so at the end you get back to your car with a short transfer.

If you only have half a day, just walk the Prosiecka valley itself, from Prosiek to Svorad and back. Up to Svorad it is 5 km, around 2 hours, with 395 m of climbing and 95 m of descent.

The Prosiecka valley: Vráta, ladders and the Červené piesky waterfall

The Prosiecka valley has been a national nature reserve since 1967. It is 3.5 km long, and the Prosiečanka stream runs through it, having carved rock towers and walls into the limestone and dolomite. Right at the start you pass through a rock gateway called Vráta. Above the gorge, a strong spring of the Prosiečanka rises.

The path then follows the stream and crosses wooden footbridges to the Červené piesky junction below the Sokol rock. There is a hikers’ shelter here, a good place for a snack.

  • The Červené piesky waterfall: from the junction it is a detour of about 10 minutes. You walk below a rock wall and across a rocky spur secured with chains into a small side valley, where the water falls from a height of about 15 m. The waterfall is at its best after rain, but that is also when the rocks are slippery.
  • Sokol: above the junction, the valley turns into a dry gorge with three rock steps. You climb them on two steel ladders and with the help of chains. It is the most fun part for children and adults alike; you just have to wait until people coming the other way have cleared the ladder.

Beyond the gorge, the forest opens up and you come out on the Svorad plateau.

Svorad, Veľké Borové and the Oblazy mills

Svorad is a karst plateau with wide meadows. According to Wikipedia, they were created in the 18th and 19th centuries as pastures for people from the surrounding villages. From the plateau you continue to the village of Veľké Borové and from there descend into the Kvačianska valley.

The Kvačianska valley has also been a national nature reserve since 1967. It lies between the villages of Kvačany and Huty, and it is a deep valley with steep limestone slopes that the Kvačianka stream has cut through the mountains.

The best-known spot in the valley is the Oblazy watermills, a 19th-century technical monument above the Kvačianka stream. The lower mill with its sawmill has been restored, and its machinery still runs on water power. Inside there is an exhibition of milling technology in Liptov. There is no admission charge; by the mill there is a collection box for voluntary donations. According to hiking websites, the lower mill is open all year, roughly from 9:00 to 17:00.

A short way from the mills is the Ráztoka waterfall (Ráztocký vodopád), about 8 m high. Just cross the stream and you will see it after 50 - 60 metres.

Where to park and how to get back to the car

  • Prosiek: at the mouth of the Prosiecka valley, on the edge of the village, there is a larger paid car park. Parking is governed by the village’s regulation (VZN 1/2026 on parking, in force from 13 July 2026); you will find the current amount on prosiek.sk.
  • Kvačany: at the mouth of the Kvačianska valley there is a paid car park for about 200 cars.

If you are doing the full loop, park in Prosiek and start with the Prosiecka valley. That way you go up through the gorge with the ladders, which is safer than going down, and the mills await you at the end as a reward. If you only want to go to the mills, park in Kvačany and walk up the valley against the current.

On fine weekends the Prosiecka valley gets busy, and there are queues at the ladders. If you can, come early in the morning or go on a weekday.

With children, and when to go

The Prosiecka valley is a popular trip with children, but be prepared for the ladders and chains. A child who can climb a ladder and manage two hours of walking uphill will love it. You cannot get through with a pushchair. On the ladders, the adult goes below the child, not above.

With small children or a pushchair, the Kvačianska valley is better. From the car park in Kvačany you walk up the valley to the mills without any ladders, and there is plenty to look at by the mills.

When to go:

  • spring and early summer: the streams carry the most water and the waterfalls are at their fullest,
  • summer: the valley is in the shade, and in the limestone gorge it stays pleasantly cool even in a heatwave,
  • autumn: for the colours of the forest on the slopes above the Kvačianka,
  • winter and frosty spells: the ladders and chains in the Prosiecka valley can be icy; do not go there without experience and crampons.

Both valleys are national nature reserves, so stay on the marked trail and take your rubbish home with you.

What to combine it with

After the hike, it is worth cooling off in Liptovská Mara, or stopping on the way home at the Havránok open-air museum above Liptovská Sielnica, which is on the same side of the lake. You will find more ideas for trips with children in our guide to Liptov with kids, and if a bigger mountain hike appeals to you, take a look at Chopok in summer.

From Bosorka Zrub in Liptovský Trnovec you are in Prosiek in about a quarter of an hour, so you can set off on the hike without an early alarm and still grill something in the garden in the evening. We are a local host and nobody pays us for our recommendations.
