What to fit into half a day in Liptovský Mikuláš
Liptovský Mikuláš is 7 km from the cabin, about 10 minutes by car. For half a day in town, one institution is enough: the Janko Kráľ Museum. Besides its main building it has other exhibitions in the centre, so you can put your visit together according to the time you have and the weather.
A plan for the morning:
- An hour to an hour and a half: the exhibition Chapters from the History of the Town of Liptovský Mikuláš (Kapitoly z histórie mesta Liptovský Mikuláš), with the memorial room of Janko Kráľ.
- About half an hour: the Mikuláš torture chamber and courtroom in the basement.
- If you have time left: a walk to the Tatrín exhibition on Tranovského Street or to the Rázus House on Vrbického Street.
- In summer: the synagogue on Hollého Street.
In the afternoon you can head back to the water or to the water park. That way the whole trip fits into half a day and you do not have to sort out lunch in town.
Watch the opening hours outside summer. From September to June the museum is closed on Mondays and on Sundays only open from 10:00 to 12:00. The best days to visit are therefore Tuesday to Saturday.
The Janko Kráľ Museum: the history of the town and the poet’s memorial room
The main exhibition is called Chapters from the History of the Town of Liptovský Mikuláš. It takes you through the history of the town from the earliest times to the end of the Second World War. Part of it is the memorial room of Janko Kráľ, the Romantic poet who was born in Liptovský Mikuláš and after whom the museum is named. Allow an hour to an hour and a half for the exhibition.
If you are with children who are not very keen on history, go straight down to the basement and pick only part of the main exhibition.
Jánošík in Liptovský Mikuláš: the torture chamber and the courtroom
Juraj Jánošík, the legendary Slovak outlaw, was tried right here in Liptovský Mikuláš. The trial took place on 16 and 17 March 1713 and ended with a death sentence. According to legend, he was executed on a hook driven through his left side. How exactly he died is not known for certain, though; he may have been hanged.
In its underground rooms the museum has an exhibition called the Mikuláš Torture Chamber (Mikulášska mučiareň). It shows how Jánošík was interrogated, and the courtroom is part of it. Admission is paid separately, €2 for adults and €1 for children. If you only have time for one thing and you are with children, choose this one.
If you are interested in Jánošík, also take a look at our guide to Likava Castle. According to Visit Liptov, he was imprisoned there for a time.
Tatrín, the Rázus House and the synagogue
The Janko Kráľ Museum also manages other places in the centre:
- Tatrín and the Demands of the Slovak Nation (Tatrín a Žiadosti slovenského národa): an exhibition in the historic Lutheran parish house on Tranovského Street.
- The Rázus House (Rázusov dom): the house of the Rázus brothers on Vrbického Street.
- The synagogue: the Jewish synagogue on Hollého Street. It is open to the public in summer.
All three are in the centre and you can walk between them. Check the opening hours of these branches on the museum’s website before your visit, as they may differ from those of the main building.
How much admission costs and when it is open
According to its website, the Janko Kráľ Museum has these opening hours and prices:
- 1 September - 30 June: Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 - 18:00, Sunday 10:00 - 12:00, closed on Monday.
- 1 July - 31 August: every day 10:00 - 18:00.
- Chapters from the History of the Town: adults €4, children €2.
- Jánošík’s torture chamber and courtroom: adults €2, children €1.
So a family of two adults and two children pays €18 for both exhibitions. Prices are in euros.
The town is also home to the Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology. You will find its opening hours and admission on the museum’s website.
With children, and when it rains
Liptovský Mikuláš is a good plan for a rainy morning, because everything is under one roof and close together. Children are usually most interested in the torture chamber in the basement. It can be frightening for the youngest, so tell them beforehand what they are going to see.
If it rains all day, combine the museum with the Demänovská caves. We have put together more ideas in our guide to Liptov on a rainy day.
Where to eat and have a drink
Liptovský Mikuláš is the nearest town with a wider choice of restaurants and bars. Two tips from Kamil, the owner of our cabin:
- Route 66 at Garbiarska 627 is an American-style restaurant with a daily menu. Our host Kamil likes going there. It is open every day: Monday to Thursday 10:30 - 23:00, Friday until midnight, Saturday 11:00 - 24:00 and Sunday 11:00 - 23:00. In the same building is Game Room 66 with more than 50 games: children load a game card, collect points and choose a prize with them. The arcade opens at 14:00 on weekdays and at 12:00 at weekends.
- The LOCUS Club is a place for gentlemen that Kamil is happy to recommend. It is a bar, café and shop in one, with more than 150 premium spirits, mainly rum, whisky and cognac, and a selection of premium cigars. The staff will advise you on what goes with what and can also put on a tasting for a group. On weekdays it is open until 22:00, on Friday until midnight, on Saturday from 18:00 to midnight, and it is closed on Sunday. You can book a table. The official address is Štúrova 2, but the entrance is not from the street and many people cannot find it. From Námestie osloboditeľov, the main square, walk through the gateway of building No. 3 into the passage; the bar is at the far end on the right.
It is 7 km back to the cabin in Liptovský Trnovec. Slovakia has a zero tolerance policy on alcohol for drivers, so agree in advance who is driving, or call a taxi.
The Park of Olympic Champions
Liptovský Mikuláš calls itself the town of Olympic champions. On Saturday 10 October 2026, the Park of Olympic Champions (Park olympijských víťazov) opened here on Ulica 1. mája, between the historic centre and the shopping area. Its centrepiece is a five-metre sculpture group in bronze and stainless steel that honours the Olympic champions Michal Martikán, Elena Kaliská and Petra Vlhová. You will find what is going on in the town and the area right now in our guide to events in Liptov.
What to combine it with
Liptovský Mikuláš is 7 km from the cabin, so it combines easily with an afternoon by the water. The Tatralandia water park is only 2.5 km from the cabin. If you want to see a bit more history, the Havránok open-air museum above Liptovská Mara is 13 km from the cabin.
In winter, Mikuláš is a good alternative for a day when the weather stops you skiing. From Tuesday to Saturday the museum is open until 18:00, so you can even fit it in after a shorter day on the slopes. You will find more about a winter stay by Mara on our winter at Jasná and Tatralandia page. In the evening you return to our log cabin in Liptovský Trnovec, where a fireplace and an infrared sauna are waiting.
