How to plan a day in the Demänovská valley
The Demänovská valley (Demänovská dolina) runs south from Liptovský Mikuláš all the way up to Chopok. At its far end is the Jasná resort, in the middle are the caves and at the start is the town. So the easiest way to plan the day is to go up in the morning and gradually work your way back down towards Mikuláš.
One rule applies all year: start with whatever depends on the weather and on opening times. Chopok is best in the morning, because in summer clouds and storms often build over the mountains in the afternoon. The caves have fixed tour times, and outside summer the last tour is at 14:00.
Summer: Chopok in the morning, the cave in the afternoon
On the north side, a cable car runs from Biela Púť to Priehyba, and from there the Funitel gondola takes you up to Chopok (2,024 m). In summer 2026 they ran until 30 September, daily from 8:30 to 15:30 in September. Return tickets are dynamically priced and cost from €19 online. Jasná will publish the dates for summer 2027 on its website.
Allow two to three hours at the top. If you have the energy, you can walk from Chopok along the ridge on the red-marked trail to Ďumbier, up to 1 h 45 min one way. But then you will not make it to the cave on the same day.
From Jasná it is about 6 km to the Demänovská Cave of Liberty. Outside summer, tours start at 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00; from June to August every hour from 9:00 to 16:00. Tours cannot be booked: you just turn up and join the next one. From the car park to the entrance it is a 10 to 15 minute walk uphill. The standard tour takes an hour and costs €15 for adults and €8 for children aged 4 to 15.
From 15 May to 30 September the Demänovská Ice Cave is open too. According to the cave administration, it has already lost the last of its ice, so if you only have time for one, choose the Cave of Liberty. You will find both caves side by side, including prices for children, in our guide to Liptov with kids.
Winter: skiing, and on days off, the cave and warm water
In winter, a day in the valley belongs to skiing at Jasná. How to go about it, where to park and what a ski pass costs are covered in our guide to skiing at Jasná.
If it is windy or snowing, or you need a day off, go to the Cave of Liberty in the morning for the 9:30 or 11:00 tour. It is 6 to 7 °C inside all year, so in winter it is actually warmer in there than outside. In the afternoon, warm up at Tatralandia, 15 km from the cave. A day like this is described in full in our Tatralandia day trip guide.
Watch out at Christmas. Besides every Monday, the Cave of Liberty is also closed from 24 to 31 December and on 1 January.
Spring and autumn, when the cable cars are not running
Between the summer and winter seasons, the cable cars up Chopok do not run. In 2026 the summer season ended on 30 September. At that time of year, build your day around the cave and the town:
- the Demänovská Cave of Liberty in the morning,
- Liptovský Mikuláš in the afternoon, with the Janko Kráľ Museum and Jánošík’s underground torture chamber, open Tuesday to Saturday until 18:00,
- or, instead of the museum, Tatralandia with its covered Tropical Paradise.
You can also walk up Chopok outside the season: from Biela Púť it is about 3 hours and 915 m of climbing. In autumn, though, there is often snow and wind on the ridge, so save this option for fine days and experienced hikers.
Evening in Liptovský Mikuláš
From the Cave of Liberty it is 11 km to Liptovský Mikuláš. Our host Kamil likes going to Route 66 on Garbiarska Street there. They cook American-style food, have a daily menu and are open every day until 23:00, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. For children, the Game Room 66 arcade is in the same building.
If you are a group of adults and want to round off the evening with a good drink, Kamil recommends The LOCUS Club to the gentlemen. It is a bar, café and shop with more than 150 premium spirits, mainly rum, whisky and cognac, and a large selection of premium cigars. The staff will tell you what goes with what and can also put on a tasting for a group. You can book a table; it is closed on Sundays. The official address is Štúrova 2, but the entrance is not from the street and many people cannot find it. From the main square, Námestie osloboditeľov, walk through the gateway of building No. 3 into the passage; the bar is at the far end on the right.
Slovakia has a zero tolerance policy on alcohol for drivers. Agree in advance who is driving, or call a taxi. It is 7 km from Mikuláš to Liptovský Trnovec.
Next time, make it a weekend
In one day you can fit Chopok and the cave into the valley. Over a weekend you can add Tatralandia, or a day by Liptovská Mara with a paddleboard, as we describe in our guide Liptovská Mara in a day.
Our log cabin in Liptovský Trnovec is 21 km from Jasná, about 25 minutes by car, and 17 km from the Cave of Liberty. In the evening a fireplace and an infrared sauna are waiting, which is just what you want after a day on the ridge or on the slopes. It sleeps 8 to 10. You will find available dates on our contact and booking page. We are a local host and nobody pays us for our recommendations.
