By the water: when it is warm
With children, summer at Liptovská Mara (Liptovska Mara lake) revolves around the water. The good thing is that most of it is close by, so with small children you can head out in the morning and be back at the cabin in time for the lunchtime nap.
1. The beach by the cabin and the Liptovský Trnovec beach (from age 0). The pebble beach is 50 metres from the cabin. If you want a lifeguard, go to the Liptovský Trnovec beach (plážové kúpalisko). The swimming area is marked out with buoys, there are toilets, refreshments and a car park, and according to the village a full-day ticket for a child costs €3.50. Water shoes are handy on the pebbles. More in our guide to swimming at Liptovská Mara.
2. Tatralandia (from age 0, rain or shine). 5 minutes from us by car. Children under 6 get in free; according to the 2026 price list, children aged 6 to 11 pay €29. For the youngest there is the Caribbean Kid’s Island hall with a children’s pool and a children’s traffic playground, and for older children Tropical Paradise (Tropický raj), kept at 30 °C, with snorkelling behind the pirate ship. Prices and opening hours are in our guide to Tatralandia prices.
3. Bešeňová (from age 0, rain or shine). A thermal water park 20 minutes away by car. Children under 6 get in free, and the covered Atrium zone (Átrium) with a children’s pool is made for them. There are fewer water slides than at Tatralandia, but the thermal water is warmer. Details are in our guide to Bešeňová, and the differences in our comparison Tatralandia or Bešeňová.
4. A raft trip down the Váh and rafting (from age 8 and from age 10). The gentle raft trip down the river Váh from Červený Kút to Uhorská Ves is 11 km long and takes 1.5 - 2 hours. It runs from May to September and suits children from about the age of 8. For white-water rafting on the canal at the water slalom course in Liptovský Mikuláš, the town recommends a minimum age of 10.
5. By bike: the Celtic Expedition (from age 7 or with a bike trailer). The full loop around Mara is not suitable for children, because part of it runs along a road with cars. Families are better off on the Celtic Expedition route (Keltská výprava) from Vlachy to the little church by the water and on to Havránok: 10.7 km, 223 m of climbing, about 2 hours.
Trips into nature and up the hills
6. The Kvačianska and Prosiecka valleys (with a pushchair or with ladders). Two valleys 15 to 20 minutes from the cabin. There is no admission fee; you only pay for parking. With a pushchair or small children, walk up the Kvačianska dolina valley to the Oblazy watermills, where there are no ladders. School-age children will love the Prosiecka dolina valley: it is 5 km and about 2 hours to the Svorad plateau, with steel ladders and chains along the way. On the ladders, the adult climbs below the child.
7. Malinô Brdo and Vlkolínec (from age 3). An eight-seater gondola from Hrabovo near Ružomberok takes the children up in just under 5 minutes. Children up to the age of 5.99 ride free; in 2026 a child’s return ticket outside the main season cost €11. At the top there are electric buggies and a bouncy castle with a slide. From the top station it is about 2 km to the village of Vlkolínec, a little over 45 minutes on foot, and the way back is uphill.
8. Žiarce alpine coaster (from age 3 with an adult, from age 7 on their own). In Pavčina Lehota at the entrance to the Demänovská dolina valley, about 20 minutes from us by car. The track (bobová dráha) is 1,000 m long with a 120 m drop. Children aged 7 and over can ride alone; younger children only with an older person, with a maximum of 120 kg together. It runs from April to October. In 2025 a single ride cost €7 for adults and €6 for children up to 12, and several rides work out cheaper. Before you go, check on the Žiarce website that it is running that day.
9. Chopok by cable car (from age 6). From the north side you can reach Chopok by cable car from Biela Púť via Priehyba to just below the summit. Children up to the age of 5 ride free with an adult. At around 2,000 m it is colder than down by the lake, so pack a jacket for the children. In 2026 the summer season of the cable cars ran until 30 September. You will find more summer ideas on our summer at Liptovská Mara page.
History that grabs children’s attention
10. Havránok (from age 4). A Celtic hillfort on a hill above Mara, 20 minutes from us. Children can walk around the dwellings and ramparts from the Iron Age. Children under 6 get in free, children aged 7 to 15 pay €2, and a family ticket for two adults with children costs €10. It is open from 1 May to 31 October; in October 9:00 - 16:00.
11. Pribylina open-air museum with its train (from age 3). The Museum of the Liptov Village (Múzeum liptovskej dediny) below the Western Tatras, 30 minutes by car. Children enjoy the houses, the school and the blacksmith’s forge, and above all the historic train, which runs from May to September; a seat reservation costs €2. Children aged 7 to 15 pay €5, younger children nothing.
12. Liptovský Mikuláš and Jánošík’s torture chamber (from age 8). In the basement of the Janko Kráľ Museum there is a torture chamber and the courtroom where Jánošík, the legendary Slovak outlaw, was tried in 1713. Admission is €2 for adults and €1 for children. The torture chamber can be frightening for the youngest, so tell them beforehand what they are going to see.
Hold off on Likava Castle with children for now: it has been closed for restoration since March 2025.
When it rains
13. The Demänovská caves (from age 4). The caves are underground, so the weather outside makes no difference. According to the 2026 price list of the Slovak Caves Administration (SSJ):
- Demänovská Cave of Liberty (Demänovská jaskyňa slobody): standard route 1,150 m, about 60 minutes, adults €15, children €8. Long route 2,150 m, about 100 minutes, adults €24, children €12. Inside it is 6 - 7 °C.
- Demänovská Ice Cave (Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa): tour about 45 minutes, adults €12, children aged 4 to 15 €6. Even in summer it is only 0.4 - 3 °C inside.
For both, bring the children a warm jacket and sturdy shoes. With small children the standard route is enough. Check on the SSJ website which caves are open in the month you are visiting.
14. The Stanišovská Cave with a head torch and the Kaďa spring (from age 6). In the Jánska dolina valley, about 25 minutes by car. The cave is open every day all year round, with tours every hour on the hour from 10:00 to 16:00. The route is 410 m long and takes 50 - 60 minutes. The cave has no lighting, so everyone is given a head torch, which children enjoy more than a classic tour. After the cave you can stop at the Kaďa thermal spring in Liptovský Ján, which is free.
If it rains all day, you still have the water parks from tips 2 and 3.
In winter
15. First time on skis (from age 3). For a first go at skiing, the smaller ski areas within 20 minutes of the cabin are best. Ski Žiarce in Pavčina Lehota has a children’s lift, a ski school and ski hire. Ski Opalisko in Závažná Poruba has a separate fenced children’s area, and in winter 2025/26 children up to 110 cm tall skied free there when accompanied by a paying adult. At Jasná, at Biela Púť, there is the MAXILAND children’s ski school with group courses for children aged 5 to 11; more in our guide to skiing at Jasná. More winter tips are on our winter in Liptov page.
After skiing, children can warm up nicely at Tatralandia or Bešeňová; both water parks are open all year round.
Which tip for which age
| Age | Summer | When it rains | Winter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 | beach, Kvačianska valley with a pushchair, Malinô Brdo | Tatralandia, Bešeňová | water parks |
| 4 - 6 | Havránok, open-air museum with the train, alpine coaster with an adult | Demänovská Ice Cave, water parks | Opalisko, Žiarce |
| 7 - 10 | Prosiecka valley, alpine coaster alone, Celtic Expedition, raft trip down the Váh | Stanišovská Cave with a head torch | ski school |
| 10 and over | rafting, Chopok | Cave of Liberty, long route | Jasná |
The ages for each tip are a rough guide, not the operators’ rules. The exceptions are the alpine coaster (on their own from age 7) and rafting on the canal (the town recommends it from age 10).
What to combine it with
With children, do not plan more than one bigger trip a day: a trip in the morning, then the beach or the garden in the afternoon. You will find more summer ideas on our summer at Liptovská Mara page and winter ideas on our winter in Liptov page.
At the log cabin there is a trampoline, a children’s corner and a garden with a barbecue, so even a day without a trip has something going on. We are a local host and nobody pays us for our recommendations.
